A powerful earthquake struck off the coast of Indonesia on Tuesday evening, killing at least 47 people and leaving many more injured or missing. The quake hit at around 8:30pm local time (12:30pm EST) in the Maluku region, about 1,000 kilometers northeast of Jakarta.
The Indonesian National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) reported that multiple buildings have been toppled, including homes, schools, and government offices. “The situation is very dire,” said Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, a BNPB spokesperson. “We are working to evacuate people from the affected areas and provide medical assistance.”
Rescue efforts were hampered by the collapse of several roads and bridges, making it difficult for emergency responders to reach trapped victims. The quake was also followed by a second, smaller tremor, which further complicated rescue operations.
The earthquake’s magnitude 7.7 has left residents in shock and fear of aftershocks. “We are bracing ourselves for more earthquakes,” said Amalia, a resident of the coastal town of Ternate, where the quake was felt most strongly. “This is the worst disaster to hit our community in years.”
The Indonesian government has declared a state of emergency in several affected regions and has deployed troops to assist with rescue efforts. The Red Cross and other humanitarian organizations have also been dispatched to provide aid.
Indonesia’s geology makes it prone to earthquakes, as it sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, where several tectonic plates meet. However, Tuesday’s quake was particularly severe, causing widespread destruction and loss of life.
As rescue efforts continue, officials are working to assess the full extent of the damage and provide support to affected communities. “We will do everything in our power to help those affected by this disaster,” said Indonesia’s President Joko Widodo, who has ordered an investigation into the quake’s impact.
The death toll is expected to rise as rescue teams search for survivors trapped under rubble. In the meantime, residents are bracing themselves for further aftershocks and struggling to come to terms with the devastation caused by Tuesday’s earthquake.
